Dutch Wonderland: A Kingdom for Kids (plus a discount for the grownups!)
My family is a family of 5 with all 3 children under the age of 11. Dutch Wonderland is a wonderful option for my family because SO MANY of the rides my kids can ride with out an adult to accompany them. PLUS there is Duke’s Lagoon. The zero-depth water play area features slides, bubblers, water geysers and interactive water elements. Perfect for kids of all ages, Duke’s Lagoon is the coolest place to be Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day. You are able to rent a cabana if you would like to have a space to call your own but they also offer umbrella covered tables and a few covered areas free of charge. BUT there is not enough for each family to have their own umbrella table so get there early if this is an amenity that your family HAS to have.
Dutch Wonderland is adjacent to the Mill Stream Camping Ground so you don’t have to travel far if you are looking to stay and play for more than one day at Dutch Wonderland! Not only do they have tent camping sites but they offer partial hook up, full hook up RV sites as well as deluxe cabins. They offer BEAUTIFUL restrooms with modern showers as well as 2 laundromats and playgrounds. BUT they also offer Tipi’s!
You can sleep in a TRUE Tipi. There are 5 tipis for rent and they feature a wooden floor, electricity and a mini refrigerator. If you are looking to start tent camping THIS may be a good way to start exploring your next outdoor adventure.
Here is a video tour of our Tipi.
We loved our overnight in the Tipi!
But here is my pro tip: Bring an air mattress! And bring an air mattress that does not leak. The kids had newer air mattresses but we forgot to check OUR mattress for leaks. By 3 am we were on the floor.
Live and learn.
OH! And bring a small electric air pump to blow up those air mattresses. There is power IN the Tipi so there is no need for a car adaptor.
Over 35 rides, attractions, shows and Duke’s Lagoon water play area (open Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day), Dutch Wonderland Family Amusement Park is the perfect place to spend time together as a family. We’re designed with families with young children in mind and have been proclaimed by generations as ‘A Kingdom for Kids!’ located in Lancaster, PA, just a short drive from Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. The perfect day trip for those with little kids with big dreams of play and fun.
The water slides at Duke’s Lagoon are WONDERFUL for kids of elementary school age as well as the preschool set. There are low slides for the little ones and larger twisting slides for the bigger kids. Don’t forget the Pipeline Plunge! This enclosed, twisting, tube slide is great for the ENTIRE family. There are two options for the slides. One slide allows the sunlight to permeate the tube so you can see where you are sliding.
The other tube is pitch black.
Only 2 riders per tube (no hand held infants) PLUS the minimum weight is 90 lbs. (There is a scale) So if your two kids have have a combined weight of under 90 lbs they are not going to be able to go down the slide together.
You MUST wear shoes. Water shoes, flip flops, SOMETHING. I can’t tell you how many times I saw people sent back down the steps to get shoes. I warned them as they went up but they just brushed me off. Seriously, they have signs with “You must wear shoes” for a reason!
Bring a refillable water bottle and fill it up at the water fountain to the left of Sharky’s Grill. The water fountain is located between the entrance of the men’s and women’s restrooms.
Exploration Island – Where Dinosaurs Come to Life!
If you have a dino fan in your house you NEED to pay a visit to Exploration Island. Encounter over 20 lifelike dinosaurs along Prehistoric Path and discover their story. They are animatronic dinosaurs that move as you approach them and make prehistoric sounds. They are not scary at all but more educational. They are so NOT scary that my five year old looked at me and said, ‘Mom, These are so not real! They are robots!’ He loved them but I think he was trying to reassure me that he was not frightened.
After you pay a visit to the dinos stop by the Dino Dig where your kids can dig and play in the sand, digging up ‘fossils’ and uncovering dino prints. Don’t forget to take a ride on the Sunoco Turnpike! This classic ride has been relocated and expanded int he Exploration Island. Let the kids take the wheel and drive around the track to their hearts content! Don’t forget to smile for your photo finish. Finish your visit to Exploration Island with a trip aboard the Gondola Cruise! We had fun looking for frogs along the edge of the ‘river’. It was a very relaxing ride.
Also new for 2015 is the Bon Voyage Balloon Chase. This is a family ride that has eight hot air balloons that ascend and descend WITH a when in the center of the balloon that lets you rotate the balloon to your hearts content. This ride does go 20 feet in the air so keep that in mind if heights are not your thing. It is a great ride to get a beautiful view of the park.
My family LOVE Dutch Wonderland. It is just 30 minutes from our house but it is well worth the drive from Philly, Baltimore or DC. We saw LOTS of out of state cars in the parking lot so I know that Dutch Wonderland is loved by families from all over the area.
