Summer is going to be here in a few weeks and we are all going to be looking for something to fill the hours with our kids. Summer camps, play dates, craft classes and visiting museums are all on the top of our list. Specifically, we like to visit interactive museums such as the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg, Pa. The Whitaker Center is member of the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) you can find a museum close to you HERE.
Museums can be a bit overwhelming with all the activities, displays and events so here is how we conquer a Science Museum with Kids.
Get A Map.
Find the information desk and pick up a map. They make maps for a reason and I think that reason is to make your expereince more enjoyable! Someone (or someones) worked hard to make that map so put it to good use!
There is usually a helpful employee or volunteer at the information desk who is anxious to make your visit more enjoyable. Ask them questions that would help guide your family through a fun day.
Perhaps, they can point you in the direction of exhibits that your technology loving kids would love or a place where your noise sensitive son can be still for a while when he gets overwhelmed.
Make note of any special programming that is exclusive to the day. Snap a picture so you don’t forget where and when the activity will be taking place.
These museums are built to be interactive. They WANT kids to touch, pull, push, roll and EXPERIENCE what has been created for them. LET THEM. Let them learn, explore and enjoy the museum.
Age Appropriate Places
Keep an eye out for the age appropriate places for the little ones in your group. Many museums have spaces just like this one for the five and under set. A place they can run around, play with new friends and expereince the science museum at an age appropriate level.
Please supervise your children but also enjoy a nice bench to sit on and relax while your kids run around.
Take time out from all the fun to have a snack. There is so much information in these museums that sometimes you just need to find a nice bench, a table to a quiet corner and sit and have a snack.
As the snack that can literally go anywhere, Frito-Lay 2 Go is partnering with Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) to take families on an adventure from the seas to the galaxies. Families can receive a free kid’s pass to participating ASTC member science centers and museums nationwide with the purchase of a Frito-Lay 2 Go Variety Pack Families should look for the Frito-Lay 2 Go pack that features as astronaut, robot or dinosaur to receive a free kid’s pass.
How cool is that!?!
Frito-Lay 2 Go and ASTC are encouraging adventure in the world of science and technology by offering free kid’s passes to participating ASTC-accredited museums through June 5th. Families can find their pass with the purchase of one specially-marked Frito-Lay 2 Go 20ct Variety Pack. For a list of participating ASTC museums, visit www.FritoLay2Go.com
Reusable Water Bottle
Bring along a reusable water bottle for snack time. There are water fountains in all the museums and you can easily fill your bottle for a refreshing drink. If you need a kick of flavor bring along some water flavor enhancers! Keep hydrated because you are going to be doing a lot of walking on your adventures!
Let Them Try
Even if YOU don’t know how to interact with the exhibit let your kids figure it out. I wan’t sure how to operate or interact with the virtual graffiti wall but my kids picked it up right away. Trial and error is how they are learning.
Interactive technology is wonderful!
