The Hotel Hershey Wine and Food Festival is an amazing weekend. You can participate in one activity or all of them. One thing I know for sure, you won’t be disappointed and the wine and food will be spectacular!
Here is a recap on how my husband and I used The Hotel Hershey Wine and Food Festival as a getaway for the weekend. We were able to relax, enjoy amazing food and wine.
This is MY kind of getaway.
I have to tell you, I am a very high strung person that has a hard time relaxing.
There are some people who can just shut everything out and RELAX.
I can’t. Or I have a hard time doing it.
SO…. I thought if anyone could help me relax it would be the team at The Spa at The Hotel Hershey.
My treatment started by being introduced to my hostess. She showed me to my locker, gave me a pair of chocolate colored sandals and a plush yellow robe to put on.
As I was changing into my robe I noticed a sign that saying that they encouraged guests to leave phones in the lockers.
I am a ‘rule follower’ and I dutifully left my phone in the locker. I immediately regretted it and tried to retrieve it from the locker. BUT I forgot the key code I had JUST inputted and ended up permanently locking myself out of my locker.
UGH. So I took it as a sign from the universe I was suppose to be IN the MOMENT and enjoy the pedicure to the fullest with out trying to snap photos for the blog.
I was indulged in a pedicure and because we were at The Hotel for the Wine and Food Festival, the pedicure had a wine theme! Seriously, the scrubs they used had grape seeds and grape skins!
This pedicure was the BEST, most INDULGENT pedicure I have ever had.
Here are my highlights:
- Massage chair
- Glass of wine in my hand
- Heated neck wrap made from hemp seeds
- Vegan nail polish (*needed 1 hour dry time)
- Hot oil treatment and wrap
- Grape seed scrub and lotion WITH massage
- 1 hour of sweet indulgence
Yes… I went back to my locker to grab my phone to snap this picture! I needed documentation of me in that luxurious robe!

After my feet were properly pampered and because it was the Hotel hershey Wine & Food Weekend we headed off to Count Sebastiano Capone’s Wine & Cheese Tasting class. You can’t have a wine and food weekend with out…wine and cheese!
Wine & Cheese Class
This class was an intimate expereince with Count Sebastiano Capone, a 20th generation winemaker from Greve in Chianti. He guided us through 4 of his wine and why he paired them with each cheese.
The one piece of advise that rang out for me when choosing a wine to be paired with a food is this. Pair tannic foods with oily foods and acidic wines with fatty food.
We also learned that you need to be looking for a black rooster when you are selecting a Chianti Classico.
The Rooster Ledgend…
Red wine had been produced in this area since around 1000 A.D. and Florence and Siena long feuded over rights to this region. Finally, around 1200, they agreed to end the feud with a competition.
Horsemen were to depart from rival the cities at the crow of a rooster. Wherever they met would determine the boundary lines and settle the dispute once and for all. While the Senesi chose a well-fed white rooster, the cunning Florentines chose a starving black rooster. On the day of the event the white rooster dutifully crowed at sunrise, but the poor hungry black rooster had begun to crow long before, thus giving the Florentine rider a considerable advantage. The Senese horseman didn’t get very far and borders were established with the region now belonging to Florence.
True or not, it makes a great story and that starving Black Rooster has been immortalized on every bottle of Chianti Classico since! source….
How often do you get to take a photo with a Count? This was my first time MEETING a count…. so pictures were taken!
Here is the wine and cheese pairings:
- Piegaia I.G.T. Rosato paired with Mont Chereve Goat Cheese
- Cilla Calcinaia ( a Sangiovese and Canaiolo blend) paired with Peccorino ** this was my FAVORITE paring! The saltines of the cheese was BEAUTIFULLY balanced the Merlot. I am a big fan of Merlot so this made sense for me.
- Villa Calcinaia Casarsa paired with Dutch Mill Dance Gouda
- Vila Calcinaia (Trebbiano, Malvasia and Canaiolo blend) dessert wine with a buttermilk blue cheese. This was my most surprising paring! I would have never paired a blue cheese with a dessert wine!
This was the first time The Hotel Hershey Wine & Food Festival held a wine and cheese paring class like this one. I hope it is not the last!
Check out my recap of the blending class they offered last year. Talk about a hands on learning expereince!!
Included in your stay at The Hotel Hershey are tickets to The Hershey Gardens.
Mr. Hershey had a request to ‘create a nice garden of roses’ for the community to enjoy. In 1937 a 3 1/2 acre garden opened to the public and has since expanded to a 23-acre botanical garden complete with a Children’s garden, Japanese Garden, Arboretum, Herb Garden and the newly opened Conservatory, complete with Butterfly Atrium.
I can’t grow a rose to save my life so to see so may varieties of roses in one collection just blew my mind! Some were fragrant, some were not. But all were beautiful. I was impressed that even after the heat of the summer, there were roses blooming in the late August.
I know that the rose was a favorite of Mrs. Hershey and you will find roses in the artwork and architecture of The Hershey Spa, as well in other locations throughout the property.
The @hersheygardens has an AMAZING butterfly atrium. Only 25% of the butterflies come from North America. The rest are from the continents of Asia, Africa and South America. I had to capture a photo of the #monarchbutterfly because it is my daughter’s all time favorite. I believe there were over 500 butterflies in the atrium. We even had one catch a ride on our shirt for a short time. Hosted by @thesweetestplaceonearth for #thehotelhersheywff. Did you know @thehotelhershey & The Hershey Lodge guests get complementary admission to @hersheygardens & The Hershey Story?! #sweetestmoms
One of my favorite new additions to The Hershey Gardens is the Butterfly Atrium. They did have a small butterfly garden/enclosure in the Children’s garden and we loved it, but this one is breathtaking. Over 500 species of butterflies from 3 continents will greet you, flutter past you and if you are lucky, land on your shoulder.
It was a photographers paradise!
Just watch where you step because some times butterflies like to land in the walk ways!
The Concho y Toto Wine dinner was sold out (get your tickets early!!) so we took advantage of the cool summer evening and had dinner on the veranda of Trevi 5. We LOVE Italian cuisine and Trevi 5 does not disappoint.
The portions are not to large or too small and the flavors are well balanced, yet surprising.
We were able to select off the Summer menu.
The Trevi 5 menu changes seasonally. Here is what we selected:
Bruschetta~Marinated Tomatoes, House Made Ricotta, Crostini
*we ALWAYS order bruschetta when it is available. We love to taste different interpretations of one of our favorite appetizers. Trevi 5 did not disappoint!
Grilled Veal Tenderloin ~ Crispy Ricotta Gnocchi, Roasted Wild Mushrooms, Grilled Corn, Truffle Cream
This was the perfect forkful! The veal was seared beautifully and I almost asked if they would share their ricotta gnocchi recipe.
Grilled Pork Chop ~ Caramelized Peach and Almond Fregula Sarda, Halloumi Cheese, Broccolini
My husband ordered this dish and he was impressed at the way the grilled peaches and hallioumi cheese balanced out the pork chop.
Cherry Tart ~ served with house made vanilla bean ice cream and chocolate sauce.
I have to tell you, we practically licked the plate by the time we finished this dessert.
After dinner we decided that we could take full advantage of our weekend away from the children and stopped by the Iberian Lounge for an after dinner cocktail. They have a live jazz trio playing and a few couples were dancing on the dance floor.
As tempting as it was to order the Hershey’s Kisses Signature Chocolate Martini, I ordered an Oranje Ward Eight. (Ketel one oranje, Bulleit bourbon, lemon, pomegranate & orange juice.) I think I found a new favorite cocktail! My husband ordered a Bourbon on the rocks.
We had wonderful conversation with the guests around us. They were there celebrating a birthday and another couple was there for a wedding that was on the property. Bowls of Hershey Kisses and snacks were up and down the bar so we always has something to munch on. The Iberian Lounge does offer light fare and as tempting as it was to order the truffle fries, we had to hold back because we were still so full from dinner!
The Grand Tasting is just that…GRAND!
With over 80 wines to sample and food from 8 different food vendors you are sure to find something you will enjoy.
These kabobs were a huge hit! How could they not be good?! great things come from repurposed beer kegs!
