Pumpkin Carving Tips
I was recently at Walt Disney Studios for a press event to celebrate Finding Dory being available on Digital HD on 10/25 and Blue-ray on 11/15. We had to opportunity to have a pumpkin carving party with master pumpkin carver, Joseph Yakovetic and would love to pass along his carving tips to you!
Painting & Carving
- Pumpkin. (Blemish free)
- Linoleum Cutter
- Ribbon Tools
- Push pins
- Anti bacterial wipes
- Graphite Paper
- Small paint brush
- Sharpie (black)
- Paint (blue, yellow and magenta for Dory)
- Old CD or DVD
- Sharp knife
- Bleach & Water
- LED light
- Print out a design that you would like to have on your carved pumpkin.
- Wipe your pumpkin with the anti bacterial wipe. This will help inhibit mold growth.
- Hold your graphite paper with the graphite facing the skin of the pumpkin.
- Use the push pins to hold the graphite paper in place.
- Pin your design printable over the graphite paper.
- Use your pen to trace all the lines of the design.
Your design will transfer to the pumpkin. This will give you the general outline and design of Dory.
Use your Sharpie marker to trace over the graphite lines and make them darker and more pronounced.
If your sharpie gets ‘clogged’ with graphite, wipe it on a piece of paper to clear it. I was wiping my sharpie on a piece of paper towel and that did not work as well as wiping it on a piece of paper. Also, use the side/edge of the Sharpie instead of the point.
Fill in all the dark sections of your design.
Once everything is filled in, wipe the pumpkin down with a wipe. This will remove the graphite.
You are now able to clearly see what parts need to be filled in.
Fill in any spaces and make your lines more defined.
Start with the yellow paint and her tail and fins.
Use the blue to fill in Dory. She is a natural blue, you know.
Finally use magenta to fill in her eyes and her tongue.
Carving With Tools
Now, this is my FAVORITE part!
Use the small linoleum cutter to carve a groove all around the outside of Dory. Use a 35-45 degree angle to peel/carve off the orange flesh. Trace all around her.
Use the same tool to trace around the whites of her eyes and to take out a small circle for the glimmer in her eye.
With the ribbon tool, peel the skin off the pumpkin to carve her eyeballs. I know that sounds a little strange, but that is what you are doing.
Also go ahead and carve out her teeth.
Check out how Joseph Yakovetic carves:
Then you are done!
Just spritz or brush on a mixture of water and bleach to kill any bacteria on the cut surfaces. He didn’t tell us the ratio but I would use a 50/50 mix.
But what about removing the seeds?
Joseph Yakovetic shared with us a BRILLIANT way of removing the seeds and pulp from the pumpkin. A CD! I used an old AOL CD I had rolling around in a drawer and it WORKED! Joseph joked that he was sure we had a Frozen CD lying around that we could use. You should have heard the gasps of disbelief when he suggested this!
I would NOT suggest using your Bluray of Finding Dory. NOPE. Don’t do that.
Light It Up
Joseph had suggested using a battery powered light versus a candle. I had always been a candle girl but I will be taking the masters’ suggestion!
I decided to carve out the FINDING DORY with the ribbon tool and then I added additional lines around her fins. This is just because I get a little carve crazy when it comes to carving pumpkins.
