What can be be substituted for the Ranch dressing mix packet?

If you are out of the ranch dressing packet, and can’t get to the store, mix up a batch of my DIY ranch spice mix and add 3 tablespoons in substitution of the ranch packet.

How to make Buffalo flavored Chex mix

  1. Heat oven to 250 F.
  2. Combine the corn Chex, wheat Chex, broken asian rice crackers, peanuts and White cheddar crackers in a large roasting pan.
  3. Microwave the butter and Frank’s sauce to melt it to liquid, stir in the ranch packet.
  4. Pour over the dry Chex mix ingredients and stir to coat completely
  5. Bake at 250 F for 1 hour 15 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes.
  6. Cool completely and store in an air tight container.

Why is the baking time more than a traditional Chex Mix recipe?

The reason this chex mix recipe takes and additional 15 minutes is because there in additional moisture with the Frank’s hot sauce. It needs  additional time to allow the extra moisture to bak out and make the Chex mix crisp.

Can I microwave Buffalo Chex mix?

You are welcome to microwave the Buffalo Chex mix to cook it but I am not a fan of microwaving Chex mix. I love the toasting of the ingredients that the oven brings to this recipe. There is something nostalgic about waiting the hour and anticipating the goodness of the hot Chex mix coming out of the oven. Plus, I don’t have a microwavable bowl that is big enough to hold this recipe.
