Is it so simple to make a DIY Mickey Mouse Pumpkin decoration! This is a no carve pumpkin project that is kid friendly and can be up-cycled year after year.
I was visiting Disney Springs for dinner at Splitsville Orlando and I was loving all the subtle nods to Mickey in the decorations. I stopped and took a photo of a Mickey Mouse Pumpkin planter because it was too cute not to recreate. My friend Bert Anderson said that if I would craft it, she would make it. But it HAD to be easy. I assured her it would be super simple that even the non-crafty crafter could make one for their home.
What supplies do you need to make a Mickey Mouse Pumpkin?
- 2 small no carve, styrofoam pumpkins
- 1 large pumpkin. (real or fake)
- 1 can of spray paint
- 4 bamboo skewers
What tools and materials are needed to make a Mickey Mouse pumpkin?
- Metal sekwer
- Cardboard or paper to cover the work surface
- White vinegar and paper towel
Should I use fresh or fake pumpkins for this project?
For this Mickey Pumpkin project I am using both fresh and fake pumpkins. The face is a fresh pumpkin and the ears are fake pumpkins. It is IMPORTANT that the ears be fake because they are much lighter than a fresh pumpkin of the same size. You want to ear pumpkins to be light so they don’t break off of the bamboo skewers that will hold them in place.
Can I use a fake pumpkin for the face?
Yes! Feel free to use a fake pumpkin for the face. You will be able to use the decoration year after year. I wasn’t able to find a fake pumpkin of the size I wanted at the price I wanted and opted for a real pumpkin.
Prepare the pumpkin for painting.
If you are using a fresh pumpkin for the head of the Mickey, chances are that the pumpkin has been sprayed with some sort of wax or protectant to help preserve the freshness of the pumpkin. Use a paper towel and wipe down the pumpkin with vinegar and hot water. I splash a bit of vinegar on the towel and do my best to break the coating on the pumpkin. Rinse with hot water to further remove the wax coating and rinse off the vinegar. My removing the coating on the pumpkin, the spray paint will adhere to the surface better.
