What Will You Find In The Pixar Archives
Pixar archives everything from first ideas on a napkin to the final film ends to the invitation to the wrap party are kept in the archives. The collection started with Toy Story and will continue until they fill the over fifteen thousand square feet of archival storage space.
Pixar Archives Location
The Pixar archives are in an undisclosed location. That is right, I can’t tell you. Invitation only guests are met at a meeting point and then escorted to the entrance point of the archives. Guests are escorted and no photography or recording of any kind is permitted.
Once inside the front door, guests walk over a mouse trap like sticky surface to keep debris out of the archives. I think I need one of these mats for my front door! The images for this post were provided and approved by Pixar. We were provided pencils to take notes on paper as pens or phones were not permitted in the archives.
Pixar Traveling Exhibits
For the past 15 years Pixar has presented a traveling art show to the public. From museums to various art installations Pixar shares the artistry and magic of the animated features that we all love. These items are meticulously packed for shipping, clean upon arrival and departure of every location and travels with their own curator to ensure the collections safety and environmental conditions. Once these items arrive back at the Pixar archives for long term storage, they are allowed to acclimate for several days to the conditions of the building. They are then unpacked, cleaned, logged and returned to the archives.
Storing Pixar Art
Flat items such as line drawings, concept art, clean up art, inspiration pieces and final art are kept in flat folders with numbers. Through an intricate catalog system, similar to the dewey decimal system, these items are then logged and stored in boxes in the climate controlled environment. The curators handle each item with lint free, cotton gloves so as not to transfer oils to the items.
The cabinets that hold the archives roll on ball bearings, of sorts, and while weigh an undisclosed amount of weight, easily slide with the turn of a wheel. When the cabinets are slid together, they form for further protection of the Pixar archives collection if a natural or man made disaster would occur.

Isolation Room At Pixar Archives
The isolation room at the archives is one more layer of security and protection of the Pixar treasures. Additional fire suppression, humidity control, special lighting and more of the HUGE sliding cabinets hold the acid free boxes.
The sculpture and mole room hold the original super sculpey head models of Buzz, Woody, Bow Peep and all the Toy Story characters. While they no longer use super scupley and have moved on to clay, these treasures are still part of the history of Pixar animation and are kept in as pristine conditions as possible.

Becoming A Super Hero
While we were touring Pixar Studios, we got some one on one time with one of their animators and he walked us through how simple likes can turn into a super hero. Anything goes and you never know where inspiration will strike. So may options, suggestions and ideas went into creating the characters on Incredibles 2 (watch for some new characters!) and this expereince gave us just a peak at what the whole process entailed.
This is me with my final ‘super’. I will explain what you are looking at. I am a super hero and my power is capturing memories. That is my mobile phone in my hand and my hair is large and in charge.
Do you think they want to put it in the archives?
