🌸 When are figs in season?
Of course, it totally depends on where you live, but where I’m from, figs are in season late summer into fall. Now I’m no gardener so I had to do a bit of research to tell you this next part. If you’re interested in growing your own figs, they say it’s best to plant them in the spring and as potted plants.
The big fig season is short and lasts for the months of August through October, depending on your location. But the first or "breba" season is the first few weeks in June and those figs grow on the 'old wood' or the branches that survived the winter. The second, and usually larger harvest, or "new wood" season typically runs from August through October.
Nutritional Value of Figs
Dried figs seem to offer a higher concentration of energy, minerals, and vitamins. And fresh figs contain an antioxidant value that is comparable to apples.
Figs are also a good source of a variety of vitamins such as A, K, E, and the B-complex group. Lastly, dried figs are excellent sources of minerals like calcium, copper, potassium, manganese, iron, and zinc.
Now that we know the benefits, let’s look at a few must-try recipes!

Similar to other fruits of this nature, figs are sweet and filled with lots of tiny little seeds. It can be eaten when ripe or dried. Although we call it a fruit, it’s actually not.
1. Fig Preserves
Greek Yogurt Topped with Fresh Figs
We are a sous vide yogurt eating family and have it several times a week. Typically we’d top it with my keto granola. Now that figs are in season, I’m definitely going to be adding fresh figs to our yogurt.
2. Preserved Figs
3. Fall Fig and Chicken Sandwich
Although this recipe calls for fancy ciabatta bread, I’ll most likely go for any bread I have on hand. The other ingredients are pretty classic to a homemade chicken salad. I’m pretty excited about making these. The added sweet flavors of the figs seem like it will be a hit with my kiddos (versus the purple grapes).
4. Drying Figs
5. Sheet-Pan Chicken With Figs
This recipe had me at sheet pan. Anytime I can add all the ingredients in or onto one dish, I’m sold. Chicken drum sticks, dried figs, and a few handfuls of arugula are the highlight of this dish. I may substitute the drum sticks for chicken thighs or make two separate pans with both kinds of meat cuts. Adding this recipe to the sheet pan salmon and veggies my daughter LOVES.
6. Bacon Wrapped Figs
Calling for just bacon and figs, I can’t pass this combination up. This seems like the perfect brunch and/or potluck type of meal. Regardless, it’s going on my all-things-fig try list.
7. Honey-Fried Figs
A recipe I found said to combine honey, butter, and figs in a pan, cook until soft, and serve hot. Another recipe that sounds so yummy! The Spruce Eats suggests putting this yummy goodness on top of ice cream or topped with a dollop of yogurt or whipped cream.
8. Fresh Fig Salad
Fresh figs seem to be a go-to salad topper. We typically go for mixed salad greens, but I also like my fair share of kale. Perhaps the hubby would like the kale if it were topped with figs?? I don’t know, but it’s worth a try!
9. Amaretto baked figs
Roasting fruit or a vegetable will always bring out the sweetness. Baking figs will enhance the already sweet fruit.
10. California Fig-Cranberry Sauce with Oranges and Port
11. Fig Mead: Honey Fig Wine
12. Spiced Chocolate & Dried Fig Cake
13. Fig, Rosemary, & Goat Cheese Tartines

Although fall typically ushers in soup and all things pumpkin spice season, I’m gonna be adding figs to my shopping list and meal plan.
