Sunflower butter is a delicious, allergy-friendly alternative to peanut butter and other tree nut kinds of butter. This sunflower butter recipe has no added oil and is ready in less than 5 minutes.
Many schools are nut-free in the cafeteria, including lunches made at home. Buying sunflower seed butter can be a bit expensive for a kid to turn their nose up at it so making a batch at home can be an economical way of introducing sunflower nut butter.

📝 Ingredient notes:
- Sunflower seeds - use shelled sunflower seeds and if they are not already roasted you will want to be sure to roast the raw shelled sunflower seeds.
🔄 Substitutions
- Swap the nut - if you don't have a tree nut allergy substitute another nut for the sunflower seeds such as pecans for pecan butter.
- Salt - salt can be added to taste in this nut butter spread.
🛠️ Helpful Kitchen Tools
- Blendtec blender - I have the classic blender in white. It is an investment piece so watch for sales. Stainless-steel forged blade with wings for amazingly smooth blends (10x stronger than other blender blades). Note- Blade is not sharp, blade is dull. No more cuts and pokes.
- Blendtec Twister Jar - this is a MUST if you are making your own nut butters. No more scraping down the blender jar with the twister lid.
🔪 How to make Sunflower Butter, basic instructions
- Toast the sunflower seeds if they raw.
- Blend the sunflower seeds on high until smooth.
📷 Sunflower Butter Recipe, blender instructions
- Place sunflower seeds into the blender jar of a high-powered blender.
- Blend on a low speed for 1 minute continuously, stop and scrape down the sides if needed. If using the blendtec twist jar rotate the twister lid counter clockwise as it blends.
- Increase the speed to high, and blend for an additional minute.
- If needed, scrape down the blender jar.
- Continue blending on high for 30 seconds to one minute until the sunflower seed butter reaches your desired consistency.
🌀 Food Processor Instructions
I love a high-powered blender for making homemade nut butter but not everyone has a blender that can get the nut butter silky smooth. A food processor will work in place of a blender but there are a few more steps and a bit more scraping.
- Place sunflower seeds into the bowl of the food processor, respectively. Pulse the sunflower seeds until they are finely chopped.
- Blend on a low speed for 1 minute, then stop the machine and scrape down the sides.
- Blend on a low for an additional 1 minute, stop the machine and scrape down sides. The sunflower seed butter will start to form a clumpy paste.
- For a third time, blend on a low speed for 1 minute, stop the machine and scrape down sides. The sunflower seed butter will be thick and grainy at this point.
- Blend on a low speed fourth time for 1 to 2 minutes longer. The sunflower seed butter should be creamy and smooth at this point. If adding salt, add it now and process or blend again to combine.
❄️ Storage tips
Store sunflower butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three months, or for smoother spreading, keep at room temperature for a couple of weeks.
👩🍳 Chef Tip
Different food processors have different power levels. Always either pulse or use the low speed when making nut butter in the food processor. It will take longer but the end results will be amazing.
