How to make whipped coffee:

  1. In the bottom of the bowl of a stand mixer combine the hot water, sugar, and instant coffee crystals.
  2. Whisk for 3 minutes on the highest setting. Foam is ready when stiff peaks hold.
  3. Heat milk for your coffee drink, if having a hot drink, pour into a glass and scoop a large portion of the whipped coffee on top of the milk.

Do you have to hand whisk whipped coffee?

If you have seen the viral videos on Tic-tok you will note that the ingredients are shipped with either a spoon or a hand whisk. It CAN be done but it DOES take a LONG TIME. Think 15 minutes and a bunch of forearm muscles.

I tried to use a blender as well as an immersion blender to try and replicate the fluffy foam but it did not work. I was actually kind of surprised at this. Turns out you DO need a whisk and aeration motion to get good volume and height on the whipped coffee foam.

If you are looking for a faster way to make whipped coffee without feeling like your arm wants to fall off, a stand mixer with the whisk attachment works beautifully. A hand mixer with the whisks or even the flat beaters will work faster than hand whipping the ingredients.

Frequently asked questions, answers and tips:

What is whipped coffee?

I was introduced to whipped coffee when it hit my social media channels and I couldn’t get away from it! Turns out it is a coffee drink that is an emulsion of sugar, hot water and instant coffee granules and then spooned over hot milk. The creamy milk pulls through the cloud coffee as you take a sip for a multi-textured drinking experience.

Can you use regular coffee for whipped coffee?

Don’t make the mistake I did when I first tried to make my first batch of whipped coffee. I mistakenly used regular ground coffee instead of the dried instant coffee granular crystals. The instant coffee will dissolve when you whip it with the other ingredients.
The regular coffee ground will just be grainy and awful. Save your regular coffee for when you make cold-brewed coffee.whipped coffee on top of hot milk in a glass cup

Can you make fluffy coffee without the sugar?

You are able to make your fluffy coffee cloud without sugar BUT keep in mind that the sugar helps stabilize, as well as sweeten the whipped coffee. If you want to have your fluff stay fabulous use sugar.

Can whipped coffee be made ahead of time?

One of the most magical parts of cloud whipped coffee is that you can not only make it ahead of time but you can make it in large batches. Keep the 1:1:1 ratio when you make your big batch and be sure the foam forms a stiff peak.
Scrape it into a closed container and store in the refrigerator for 5 days. To cleanly scoop out a serving of foam, run your spoon under hot water to warm the spoon before scooping out your potion.

Whipped coffee-making tips:

Hot water – I microwave water but you are welcome to get water from your one cup coffee maker
More is easier – Some recipes call for 2 tablespoons of each ingredient but this one calls for 3 tablespoons of each. My stand mixer is large and I needed the extra tablespoon to help the whisk reach the ingredients.
Speed of Whipping – start the mixer on a low setting to get the foaming started and cut down on splashing, then turn up the speed to 10 for 3 minutes.

Mmmm. I wonder if I can use the coffee in my K-pods for the instant coffee?….. I thought only whipping cream could beat into stiff peaks like that– I’m amazed! It sounds good.

I wouldn’t use the coffee from a K-cup. Those pods are a ground coffee…. think drip through coffee. Instant coffee is like a dehydrated coffee. Just add water and drink.
