Learn how to toast pecans in the oven or on the stovetop in just 10 minutes or less. Toasting brings out their natural oils, deepens the nutty flavor, and gives them a crisp bite, making them perfect for snacking, baking, or topping your favorite salads.

Use your toasted pecans in bourbon balls or on the outside of your holiday pineapple cheeseball.
Here is why roasting pecans is amazing:
- Bigger flavor: Gentle heat releases the natural oils, amplifying the nutty taste.
- Better texture: Toasting adds a satisfying crunch and golden color, especially in baked goods.
- Freshness on demand: Toasting right before using keeps the nuts tasting their best.

Ingredients needed:
Start with raw, shelled pecans. I find that whole halves work best, but pieces will also toast beautifully. It depends on how you will use them after toasting.

How To Roast Pecans
I am going to walk you through two different methods of toasting pecans, the oven method, and the dry skillet method. I love each of them for different reasons and they each have applications as explained below.
Skillet Method

Use this method when you only need a small amount I would say, one cup or less. It's quick, but requires constant attention.
- Place pecans in a dry skillet over medium heat.
- Stir or toss every 20-30 seconds to keep them moving.
- Cook for 3-5 minutes, until fragrant and lightly browned.
- Transfer immediately to a plate to stop cooking.
Don't Burn Them
Don't walk away! Pecans can go from perfectly toasted to burnt in under a minute.
Oven Method
Best for toasting larger batches. The oven gives more even results with less stirring.

- Spread pecans in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Lining the pan with parchment or a silicone mat makes cleanup easier.
- Bake in a preheated 325°F oven for 5 minutes. Stir.
- Continue baking for 3-5 minutes, until fragrant and golden brown.
- Remove immediately to a plate to cool. Don't leave them on the hot baking sheet.
The Nose Knows
Once you start to smell toasted pecans, they're ready. If you smell them from across the room before opening the oven, they may already be overdone.
FAQ's and Tips
Yes, but watch them closely. Chopped nuts toast faster, and the fine dust can burn quickly, leaving a bitter taste.
Look for dark edges or spots, along with a strong, almost burnt aroma. If that happens, it's best to start over.
Popular recipes that use toasted pecans:
- Asian Ramen Noodle Slaw - switch out the sliced almonds for toasted pecans.
- Hot Bacon Dressing - serve toasted pecans with your spinach salad with hot bacon dressing.
