Grape jelly meatballs are a sweet, tangy, saucy party appetizer made with frozen meatballs, chili sauce, and grape jelly in the crockpot. Also known as cocktail meatballs, they take 10 minutes of hands-on time and are my most requested potluck dish.

I always go home with an empty crockpot.

The church lady and the chafing dish

This recipe came to me at my bridal shower. One of the church ladies slid me a recipe card in her own handwriting, and next to the title she had written "chafing dish meatballs."

"I knew these as chafing dish meatballs," she told me, "but you brides today don't even know what a chafing dish is."

Little did she know.

Dozens of batches later, these are still the dish I get asked to bring to church suppers, school functions, and team parties. They sit right next to my crockpot French onion meatballs on the buffet, and my list of sides for meatballs helps round out the table.

Ingredients for grape jelly meatballs

Three ingredients is all this recipe needs, but each one matters. Here is what to look for at the store.

A large bowl of breaded appetizer bites served with a bowl of red marinara sauce and a bowl of dark grape jelly meatballs dipping sauce.
  • Frozen meatballs: Use fully cooked, store-bought frozen meatballs; homestyle or Italian style both work. I have made these with my own homemade meatballs, and they broke apart with the stirring until the pot had the texture of Cincinnati chili. Store-bought meatballs are firmer and hold their shape for hours.
  • Chili sauce: This is the bottled, ketchup-style chili sauce (like Heinz) shelved near the ketchup. Do not grab sriracha or Thai sweet chili sauce; they change the flavor and the heat completely.
  • Grape jelly: Plain, smooth grape jelly. It melts into the chili sauce and gives you that glossy, sweet and tangy glaze.

How to make grape jelly meatballs in the crockpot

This is a dump-and-go recipe, but the thermometer step at the end is the one most recipes skip. It is the only way to know your meatballs are actually done.

A slow cooker filled with frozen grape jelly meatballs, positioned next to small bowls of red sauce and dark jam.

Add the meatballs

Pour the frozen meatballs into the crockpot and spread them into an even layer

Add the sauce

Pour the chili sauce over the meatballs, then spoon the grape jelly on top. Do not worry about lumps; the jelly melts as it heats.

Cover and cook

Put the lid on and cook on high for 2 to 3 hours or on low for 4 to 6 hours. Every time you lift the lid, heat escapes and the cook time stretches, so leave it closed.

Stir after the first hour

If you are home, give everything a gentle stir once the jelly has melted so the sauce coats the tops of the meatballs. If you are not home, skip it; they will be fine.

Stir in the last 30 minutes

Stir again near the end. The sauce should be glossy, slightly thickened, and clinging to each meatball.

Check the temperature

Push an instant-read thermometer into the center of the largest meatball near the middle of the pot. It needs to read 165F; check two or three, since the middle of the pot heats last.

Turn it to low for serving

Once they hit 165F, switch the crockpot to low and keep it plugged in. Serve right from the pot with toothpicks.

Chef Tip

Bubbling and hot are two different things. Sauce bubbling at the edges does not mean the center of a meatball in the middle of the pot has reached 165F. Your thermometer is the only way to know.

Keeping grape jelly meatballs safe on the buffet

This is where I see the most mistakes at potlucks. The crockpot gets unplugged to make room for another dish, or it gets left on high all afternoon.

  • Serve on low, not high. High keeps cooking the sugary sauce and scorches the edges.
  • Keep it plugged in. Hot food needs to stay at 140F or above.
  • Watch the clock if it gets unplugged. Food that sits between 40F and 140F for more than 2 hours (1 hour if it is above 90F, like an outdoor summer party) needs to be thrown out. Under that limit, reheat to 165F before serving again.

Storing and reheating grape jelly meatballs

Leftovers go in the refrigerator within 2 hours of serving. To reheat, warm them in a saucepan on the stove or in the microwave until they reach 165F.

Do not reheat cold leftovers in the crockpot; it takes too long to bring them up to a safe temperature. Once they are hot, you can move them back to the crockpot on low to keep warm.

Frequently asked questions, answers and tips:

While I try to share all the information you need to make this recipe in your home with restaurant-quality results, there still may be a question or two. Or these are questions I have received from the community about this recipe. I do my best to answer them as clearly as I can. I hope this helps.

How do I know grape jelly meatballs are done?

When the center of the largest meatball reads 165F on an instant-read thermometer. Check a few from the middle of the pot, since that is the last spot to heat up.

How long can grape jelly meatballs stay out on a buffet?

As long as the crockpot stays plugged in on low and the meatballs hold at 140F or above, they can stay out for the length of the party. If it was unplugged and they dropped below 140F, you have 2 hours (1 hour above 90F) before they need to be thrown out.

Sarah's Culinary Insight

A few things I have learned making these chafing dish meatballs that are not obvious from the steps alone.

  • I temp every batch. Ever since culinary school, I check the temperature of every meat dish I serve. For these, I check the meatball in the very center of the pot, because that one is always the last to come up to 165F.
  • The first stir is optional; the last one is not. When I am gone all afternoon, I skip the first-hour stir and they still turn out fine. The stir in the last 30 minutes is what gets every meatball coated in that glossy sauce.
  • That dark ring around the edge is from high heat. Every scorched pot I have seen at a potluck was left on high during the party. Cook on high if you need to, then switch to low before the first guest arrives.
