This recipe is my take on the classic 3,2,1 margarita cocktail. Typically a classic margarita calls for 3 parts tequila, 2 parts triple sec and one part lime juice, and sometimes a sweetener. But in this cocktail-to-go recipe, we are going to take help from the limeade for part of the lime juice and the sweetener.

Ingredients needed to make a batch of margaritas:

ingredients for to go margaritas, tequila, triple sec limeade, limes.

I love a good handcrafted cocktail as much as the next person, but sometimes it is helpful to have a large back of premixed cocktails ready to go. It is such a time saver to have all the basic ingredients already pre-measured and combined, ready to go. Just pour over ice, garnish, and serve.

  1. Use the last ¼ of a jug of limeade.
  2. Juice the limes straight into the container.
  3. Add the rest of the ingredients, close the lid and shake to combine.

How to make to go margaritas

  1. Leave enough limeade in the bottle so it comes just below the first ridge.
lime juice added to the simple syrup.
  2. Add lime juice so it comes halfway between the bottom ridge and the next ridge in the container. The juice of about 7 limes, or 7 ounces, or almost 1 cup.
tripple sec added to the to go margaritas.
  3. Add enough triple sec so that it comes just below the top ridge or marker in the container. (1 ¾ cups). 4. Fill the rest of the bottle to half way up the neck of the bottle with tequila (2 ⅔ cups).
all ingredients added to to go margaritas.
  4. Add lime slices or wedges to garnish. Close, shake and chill until ready to serve.

When it comes to making margaritas for a crowd, I keep a few favorite tools close at hand. A sturdy citrus juicer is a must-it makes quick work of lemons and limes while catching all the seeds and pulp, so you get nothing but fresh juice in your mix.

I use a simple cobbler-style cocktail shaker that comes with its own built-in strainer and a 1 oz jigger cap. It's perfect for small batches and saves me from digging through a full bar kit.

For parties, I always break out my 2-gallon glass beverage dispenser. It looks pretty on the table and lets guests serve themselves, which means I can actually enjoy the gathering instead of playing bartender all night.

And of course, I can't forget the glassware. I rotate between fun pineapple-shaped glassware for a tropical vibe and elegant hurricane glasses when I want things to feel a bit more polished. Both add a little extra charm without requiring any extra effort.

Substitutions

  • You can switch out the brand of tequila for your favorite brand. When I am making batch cocktails I don't reach for the top-shelf liquor. I save the best for my hand-crafted cocktails that are meant to be sipped and savored. Don Julio or Casamigos Blanco are some of my favorite options for this drink.
  • Triple sec is going to be the orange flavored alcohol that I add to large-batch cocktails. It is more cost-effective than the more expensive Cointreau, or Grand Marnier. But if that is all you have, enjoy!
  • If bottled lime juice is what you have in your pantry, use it! I love the taste of fresh limes but some people love the flavor of bottled lime juice. Use what you and your guests love.
  • Lime slices are what is used to garnish this drink but another fun and festive garnish would be orange slices. You always want to garnich a cocktail with a representation of the flavors that will be found in the drink.
  • The plastic container with twist top lid is perfect to take this cocktail to places like the pool, beach, lake, outdoor party or any place where glass containers are not a good idea.
  • No need to worry about ice watering down the cocktail as there is no ice included in the mix. Just be sure to have ice available when serving. Be sure to check out my blueberry cocktails too!
  • Premade mixers are not needed. Just 4 ingredients and you have a large batch of cocktails ready for travel.

Storage Tips

  • Store the pre-mixed cocktail in its closed container in the refrigerator or in a cooler filled with ice until ready to serve.

If you are wanting to have the full bar experience, rim each glass or cup with a bit of course salt.

  • To rim a margarita glass with salt you either run the cut side of a lime wedge around the rim of the glass to moisten it and then press it into a plate filled with salt.
  • Or, you can dip the rim into a shallow dish with a bit of juice on it and then press the wet rim into salt.

Frequently asked questions, answers and tips:

Can this be made by the gallon?

Most definitely! I am only able to find limeade in the 52 ounce containers where I live. If you are able to find it by the gallon you are going to want to double the ingredients and then give an extra splash to found out the full ounces.

How to you make a margarita not as strong?

My first suggestion is to add more ice. Is will water down the drink, giving it more volume in relation to the alcohol in it. Secondly, you can also substitute orange juice for the triple sec.
