Step by step, easy instructions on how to roast peppers. I am using my indoor gas stove but this can also be made on a grill. Roasting your own peppers will save you money and they will taste better!

If you have never tried a roasted pepper you don’t know what you are missing! They are sweet like a raw pepper but they are soft like a cooked pepper all with a hint of smokiness that indicative to anything that is roasted. They add depths of flavor to salads, sandwiches, pastas burgers…anything really. But form some reason these delicious treats can cost you a pretty penny in the grocery store.

How to roast a pepper on a gas stove

  1. Turn on the gas flame.
  2. Place a clean pepper on the flame.
  3. Allow the pepper to blister and char on each side.
  4. Turn the pepper until all sides are charred.
  5. Allow all sides to become blackened and the insides to cook.
  6. Remove from flame.
  7. Place in either plastic wrap or a paper bag.
  8. Allow to steam for 10 minutes.

How to peel roasted peppers

  1. Once cool, remove from wrapping and remove the blackened outside with a knife, using a scraping motion.
  2. Slice open and remove the stem, seeds and membranes.
  3. Slice and store in the refrigerator.
  4. Use within a week.

Are roasted peppers spicy?

Roasted peppers are spicy only if the pepper was a spicy or hot pepper before it was roasted. By roasting the pepper, the pepper is cooking, the skin is blistering and will be removed and the natural sugars in the pepper are brought out with the heat. By adding heat to peppers is does not add spice.

    Is there another way? I have an electric stove.

    If you have a grill that will work as well. You might want to try your broiler in your oven. Just be sure not to close the door all the way when you are broiling.
