I will toast sunflower seeds when I make my Asian ramen noodle salad, or almondina mixed nut raisin thin cookie crisp or roast them before I turn them into sunflower butter. That recipe is very similar to my homemade soy nut butter.

Ingredients needed:

raw sunflower seeds in a bag from the store

How to make Sunflower Seed Butter

Sunflower butter is a delicious, allergy-friendly alternative to peanut butter and other tree nut kinds of butter. This sunflower butter recipe has no added oil and is ready in less than 5 minutes. Hop on over to my sunflower butter recipe post.

How to boil the seeds of whole sunflower kernels to remove the seeds for roasting.

  1. Fill a medium saucepan with water.
  2. Add two tablespoons of table salt and one cup of sunflower seeds with their shells still on.
  3. Bring the water to a boi, reduce the heat to a simmer and let the seeds cook for 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Drain the seeds and rinse them with cold water.
  5. Spread the seeds out on a baking sheet and let them dry completely.
  6. Once the seeds are dry, use your fingers to crack open the shells and remove the seeds.

Tips:

  • Make sure to use a medium saucepan so that the seeds have enough room to cook evenly.
  • Rinse the seeds with cold water to stop the cooking process and make them easier to handle.
  • Dry the seeds completely before cracking them open to avoid any moisture that could cause them to spoil.
  • Be patient and take your time when cracking open the shells to avoid crushing the seeds inside.

Store the seeds

Store cooled, roasted shelled sunflower seeds in a closed airtight container for 4-5 months in the pantry or up to a year in the freezer.

Different Seasonings for sunflower seeds:

  • Sweet and spicy: Combine brown sugar, chili powder, ground cumin, cinnamon, ground cloves, cayenne pepper, salt, and dried chili flakes.
  • Spicy: Sprinkle the seeds with chili powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, red pepper flakes, or a mixture of all of them.
  • Savory: Use salt, garlic powder, or dry barbecue seasoning.
  • Seasoned Salt

Chef Tip

Use a piece of parchment paper on the baking tray to help with easy cleanup.

Frequently asked questions, answers and tips:

Will roasted sunflower seeds grow?

No, roasted sunflower seeds will not grow because they have been heat-treated, which destroys the seed's ability to germinate and grow. If you want to grow sunflowers, you will need to start with raw, unroasted sunflower seeds. These can be purchased at a garden center or online seed supplier.
