Rum punch with Bacardi is a sweet, fruity, and refreshing cocktail made with white rum, fresh watermelon, orange juice, and squeezed lime juice. This is the kind of pitcher drink you make once and get asked for every backyard cookout, pool party, and summer gathering after that. It comes together in 5 minutes and serves a crowd without any fuss.

The color alone is reason enough to add this to my red white and blue mixed drinks lineup; that watermelon red is hard to beat. It also has a permanent spot on my best Bacardi rum punch recipes list. A summer without a pitcher of frozen strawberry daiquiris or a blood orange margarita on the table is not a summer I want any part of.

Ingredients needed:

You only need 4 ingredients to make this rum punch, and the watermelon does most of the heavy lifting on flavor.

Substitutions

Switch out the light rum for dark rum, coconut rum or spiced rum to make your own version of this watermelon rum punch recipe.

Bacardi white rum is the base of this recipe; its light, clean flavor lets the watermelon and citrus shine without competing.

Dark rum adds a deeper, oaky warmth with hints of vanilla and ginger; it works well if you want a more complex flavor profile.

Coconut rum pulls this punch in a tropical direction; think less backyard cookout, more beach bar.

Spiced rum adds warmth and subtle spice notes that pair surprisingly well with the sweetness of fresh watermelon.

Flavored rums give you a wide range of options; mango, pineapple, or passion fruit rum all work here and each one changes the direction of the drink.

Making watermelon rum punch

Slices of watermelon placed inside a blender, ready to be blended for a refreshing Rum Punch Bacardi twist.

Prep the watermelon

Peel and chop your seedless watermelon into rough chunks. You do not need to be precise here; you are blending everything. Add the watermelon to your blender.

Add the rum and citrus

Pour the Bacardi white rum, orange juice, and freshly squeezed lime juice directly into the blender. Fresh lime juice makes a real difference here; bottled lime juice is flat and thin by comparison.

Blend until smooth

Place the lid on the blender and blend for about 60 seconds. You are looking for a completely smooth, evenly colored liquid with no chunks of fruit remaining.

Strain if needed

If you prefer a pulp-free punch, pour the blended mixture through a fine-mesh sieve before serving. Press gently with a spoon to get all the juice out, then discard the pulp. This step is optional but makes for a cleaner pour.

Serve over ice

Fill glasses with fresh ice, pour the rum punch over the top, and garnish with a slice of fresh watermelon and a wedge of lime. Serve immediately.

Chef Tip

If you are making this for a party, blend the watermelon alone first, strain it, and then combine the watermelon juice with the rum and citrus in a large pitcher. It skips the pulp issue entirely and makes it easy to scale up for a crowd without running the blender six times.

Frequently asked questions, answers and tips:

While I try to share all the information you need to make this recipe in your home with restaurant-quality results, there still may be a question or two. Or these are questions I have received from the community about this recipe. I do my best to answer them as clearly as I can. I hope this helps.

Can I make this rum punch ahead of time?

Yes. Blend the watermelon, orange juice, and lime juice together and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Add the rum just before serving so the alcohol does not break down the fresh citrus flavor over time.

Can I make a non-alcoholic version?

Absolutely. Leave out the rum and add a splash of sparkling water or ginger ale when you pour over ice. You get all the color and fresh watermelon flavor without the alcohol.

Do I have to use fresh watermelon?

Fresh watermelon gives the best flavor and color. Frozen watermelon chunks work in a pinch, especially if you want an icier texture without diluting the drink with extra ice.

Why is my rum punch watery?

The most common reason is too much ice added to the blender. Keep the ice in the glass, not the blender, unless you are specifically going for a frozen version.

How long does leftover rum punch keep?

Store any leftover punch (without ice) in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Give it a good stir before serving again; the watermelon juice will settle.
