These cookies would go great on a holiday cookie tray along with my homemade Pittsburgh nut roll, soft caramels (don't forget the sea salt!), Hershey Kiss Cookies (a classic!) and oreo cookie balls.

✨ Here is why this recipe is amazing:

    • Simple pantry ingredients are all you need to have chocolate chip cookies out of the oven in under 10 minutes.
    • Use your favorite yellow cake mix from Duncan Hines, betty crocker, store brand or even a homemade cake mix.
    • A box of cake mix is the main ingredient and they are usually on sale so this is a frugal dessert to make.
    • These cookies can be easily be mixed by hand. No mixer is needed!

    🍪 Ingredients needed:

Here is a visual overview of the ingredients in the recipe. Scroll down to the recipe at the bottom for quantities.

    📝 Ingredient notes:

    • Yellow cake mix - I love the buttery flavor that a yellow cake mix brings to this recipe.
    • Eggs - pro tip: leave your eggs on the countertop for 30 minutes to come to room temperature before adding them to the cookie batter.
    • Chocolate chips

    🔄 Substitutions

    • Vegetable oil - If you are out of vegetable oil substitute in equal parts applesauce. I like unsweetened applesauce.

    🔃 Variations

Switch out the chocolate chips for peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips or white chocolate chips. To make these a cake mix chocolate chip cookie with nuts, swap out ½ of the chocolate chips for your favorite nut. I love walnuts but pecans would also be a delicious option. Just be sure to toast the pecans first to bring out the full flavor.

Use a chocolate cake mix in place of the yellow cake mix and switch out the milk chocolate chips for white chocolate chips to make a chocolate/chocolate chip cake mix cookie.

    ❄️ Storage Tips

Allow the cookies to cool completely before storing in a Ziploc bag or other air-tight storage container.

📝 Frequently asked questions, answers and tips:

Can I use coconut oil instead of vegetable oil?

Coconut oil is a great substitute for vegetable oil in this recipe. Just know that the cookies will spread out more and be thinner than what is pictured in these photos. But they will be yummy!

    👩‍🍳 Chef Tip

Use a chocolate cake mix in place of the yellow cake mix and switch out the milk chocolate chips for white chocolate chips to make a chocolate/chocolate chip cake mix cookie.
