    Homemade Seasoned Ranch Cheese Crackers

This recipe was even BETTER than the seasoned ranch oyster cracker recipe we had been using. Why? Because I am adding an additional layer of flavor by using cheese-its in place of the oyster cracker.

    Homemade Seasoned Ranch Cheese Crackers

The conception of this recipe started in college with the traditional homemade seasoned ranch crackers. But as most recipes created, this one was also created by mistake. We were out of the oyster crackers but only had cheese crackers in the house. Being in college, we figured...what could go wrong!?

Nothing went wrong! Everything went right!

    Birth Control Cracker: The explanation

After much discussion, it was decided that these new crackers were going to be called Birth Control crackers. What?! Why?

Because after you eat them, your breath is so pungent with the layers of dill, garlic, and cheese cracker that NO one is getting any lovin'. Birth control. We all had a good laugh about it know that these crackers were not a true form of contraception but just a silly way of referring to our new favorite homemade snack food.

    Ingredients Needed:

homemade seasoned ranch cheese crackers ingredients on a wooden table
    • Cheese Crackers 21 oz. (or 2 small boxes)
    • Hidden Valley Ranch Salad Dressing Seasoning Mix
    • Lemon Pepper
    • Dill Weed
    • Garlic Powder
    • Vegetable Oil

    Directions:

homemade seasoned ranch cheese crackers ingredients
    1. Combine all spices and the oil in a large bowl. Whisk to combine.
    2. Add the cheese crackers and stir until they are coated completely. Be sure to scrape the bottom of the bowl and get all the delicious flavors on the crackers.
    3. Bake the seasoned ranch cheese crackers
    4. I use a large pot to bake my crackers because I find it easier to stir them. Feel free to use 2 sheet trays if you like.
    5. Bake at 325 for 20 minutes, stirring ½ way through.
    6. Cool completely and store in an airtight container.

How do you store these ranch crackers?

I will store these ranch crackers in a gallon zip-top bag but any airtight container will work. You want to be sure to keep the humidity out of these crackers so that they do not go stale.

Can other crackers be used instead of cheez-it crackers?

Use the oil and the seasonings to make other seasoned crackers. Some of our favorite Cheez-it cracker substitutions is:
    pretzel sticks
    oyster crackers
    saltine crackers
    pretzel thins
    pretzel nuggets
    butter crackers such as Ritz
Asian rice crackers (same crackers I use in my Thai Chex Mix)

Yup! 4 teaspoons, not a type-o. I could see how 4 Tablespoons could be a bit much.

        Gracie,
I am so glad you were able to customize this recipe to your liking! Did the white cheddar chees-its bake ok? I am too afraid they would burn.I take it they worked out for you.

I just made these crackers! Yum!! I did change the recipe a bit though. I added cayenne pepper, black pepper and onion powder. Plus more garlic powder and lemon pepper than it called for, also used white cheddar cheez-its.

I would store them in a closed container for a week before a party. The problem will be keeping from snacking on them! Enjoy!

How long will these crackers stay fresh if made in advance of a party if in unopened container?

OOH!!! I love the idea of using the Italian 4 cheese cheez-its! GREAT suggestion! ps... I love garlic too!

I've made these 2x now. The first time with regular cheez-its and the recommended ingredients. They were kind of bland. Next time I used 1/2 the oil and the Italian 4 cheese, cheez-its. Super yum! Making them again (third time) right now the way I made them the second time. Can't wait to eat them up! I did add 2x as much garlic this time though because I LOVE garlic.

I thought for sure the name came about for another reason. They are "crack" crackers, you can't stop eating them, fattening with all that oil and that is where the birth control comes in. LOL

I HAD to click over from Pinterest to see what the story was with these cleverly-named crackers. Too funny!! Love it and I bet I'd love the crackers, too!
